A wonderful picture, but the mood is not Edward Hopper.

I don't think the problem is the shadow, Oliver, but the large expanse 
on the left. What if you try cropping all the left to make the picture 
much tighter and turn it into a vertical? It fit's the mood better. Crop 
right up to the left part of the head. Tension.
