Be careful. A lot of digicams are meant to be used only with 
low-trigger-voltage flashes, typically 
<24v. That includes the SF20 and 24 and other relatively recent units. Older 
flashes like the 
Vivitars mentioned have trigger voltages upwards of 100v. They work OK with 
shutters that have 
mechanical sync contacts, but the newer cameras have electronic circuitry to 
fire the flash. I use a 
cheap Sunpak DS20 for fill-flash with my Panasonic LC-1 (aka Digilux-2).

Check your R-D1's instructions.
