Although I do not consider myself a guru and I do not seem to have a 12585 
hood, most of the vents in the hoods are to reduce the obstruction of the 
viewfinder.  Some of the early Summicrons were apparently "hot" from the 
Thorium included in the glass used in the lens.  I hope this helps.
