Chris,

I have had the same experience when I moved to Belgium in 1995. While I
was living in the US, I did watch a lot of NFL and college football, and
I went to many Gators games. But once in Belgium, I kind of lost touch
with American football, and discovered rugby, both on English TV and
live, since the local British, Irish and Down Under expats had an
amateur league and played next to the field where my then 8-9 year old
son played soccer. Rugby is for real men (and women, they had a women's
league too!), American football is for sissies.

When it comes to cricket, however, I must say that the American version
of the "ball hit with a stick" game is far superior. I do like baseball,
and while I realize that the NFL is more popular these days, no other
sport has inspired so much good literature and other art. Baseball also
has so many wonderful characters. BBC had an interview with Tommy
Lasorda last weekend, I enjoyed it thoroughly.

In the fall if 1994, when I knew that I would be moving to Belgium the
following spring, I did perform the great American fatherhood ritual and
took my then 5-year old son to his first baseball game, a playoff game
between the Phillies and the Braves in Philadelphia. It was great, and
much to my surprise he stayed awake through all 9 innings ;-)
