Dan,
The serial numbers do appear smaller than normal.  Could this have been
a replacement top plate?  I would e-mail Jim Lager about this, he would
be the expert.

Dan,
That top plate looks just like the one on my M3.  Only this time, for a
change, your top plate has more scuff marks than mine. :)

take a look at the top plate of this DS Leica M3....doesnt the font seem
odd ?
