A heretical suggestion might be to stay in...shudder...New Jersey. 
That's what we did in October, since we wanted to drive down to 
Philadelphia as well. Plenty of cheap if non-descript chain hotels 
there, and it is usually easy to get into Manhattan even if you do not 
rent a car.
