THE ECONOMIST discusses this issue regularly.  In general, skilled Japanese
workers earn a pay package (pay, benefits, &c) on par with that paid to
German and French workers and somewhat higher than that paid to US workers.
 Productivity between these workers is close, with the US workers having a
slight lead.

There are a lot of reasons why Japanese-made quality lenses cost less than
German- or US-made quality lenses.  Perhaps the prime factor is that the
Japanese industrial establishment is really cut to the bone and works more
closely to the timeline.  And, of course, there is no beer in Japanese
lunchrooms.
