Last evening I watched a tv segment on the Corbis (formerly Bettman)
archive. At one point the group, touring the new freezing facility in an
old limestone mine in Pennsylvania, held up a negative from vietnam and
one of them said, "This film was there." It felt like a mini-revelation.
The film was present at the scene and it holds information about its
presence there. The digital memory was also there but it won't hold the
information for posterity. It will do that again and again. And that's
cool. But something very different from the piece of film being at the
scene and holding that information for as long as its preserved.
