Erwin is at his best when writing about lenses and Leica and the photo 
industry. But some of his general economic arguments are a bit suspect. 
For example, contrary to popular belief, German industry as a whole is 
very competitive. For every company that is not doing well (like the 
mobile division of Siemens mentioned by Erwin) there are others which 
are (including BMW and Porsche, also mentioned in the article). Germany 
is in fact the world's biggest exporter, surpassing both China, the USA 
and Japan. The high unemployment and low economic growth are mainly due 
to weakness in domestic demand and structural issues in the labour market.

Leica is doing poorly because of failure of successive managements to 
recognize and adapt to the overall trends in its industry.
