Subject: [Leica] Run on Leica R lenses :-)

Mark will no doubt be happy to hear that I have just bought another
Leica lens, a 50mm Summilux R (no, not the latest version, I do not have
that kind of money to blow on a 50mm lens) for use with my Canon DSLR --
Canon does not have an L lens in that focal length, and I find the non-L
Canon 50/1.4 that I have a bit too flimsy for my taste. Another Stephen
Gandy adapter is on its way to me.

In general, in the past 2-3 months there has been a veritable explosion
of interest in Leica (and some Zeiss) glass on the Fred Miranda Canon
forum. And it is not just migrating users like me who are using R glass
on DSLRs; several people who have never owned Leica stuff are actually
buying R lenses to use on their Canons. Maybe this is after they saw
some of the 100mm Apo Macro shots I posted ;-)

In any event, I hope that Leica is aware of this trend (if it is indeed
a trend). It certainly is in keeping with my own opinion that Leica
would be a lot better off if they dumped the bodies (certainly on the R
side) and concentrated on the lenses. If several Canon users are willing
to spend the money on R glass and go through the hazzle of locating and
buying adapters to use that glass, then why not make it easier for them
and make a line of R lenses in Canon, Nikon etc. mounts? The lenses
would still be purely mechanical, but at least the need for an adapter
would be eliminated and Leica might realize some incremental revenue and
margin.
