Subject: [Leica] [OT] Now that the Olympus C-8080 has been discontinued...

Bill,
In the digital age it is in the manufacturers interest to keep the
sales drums rolling on a discontinued or soon to be discontinued
model. A retailer however would be suicidal to stock a camera as it
ends its shelf life. The sales price of a older digital P&S drops
faster than a rock on Saturn.

For a good while manufacturers offered price protection and or
buy/backs as they could dump the cameras for a price on a retailer who
thought they could move old product. Now however, even the big guys
don't especially want the old stuff unless it is very deeply
discounted, say about what the batteries would cost. So now the
manufacturers are doing a better job of managing product life cycle
inventories.

In the digital age I don't think there is going to be any new old
stock available years later.
