Hmm.  I certainly am most capable of error as many others on the LUG will
gladly tell you!

But the calculator on my computer insists that 25.4 (the number of mm in an
inch) divided by 1000 is 0.0254 which, when inverted, yields a
multiplication factor of roughly 40 (39.37, to be precise).  

1/10 of 25.4 is 2.54.  1/100 is 0.254.  1/1000 is 0.0254.
