Eric,

>From what I've read, TTL flash is difficult in high contrast situations even
with Canon's 580EX. Some Canon users say the auto setting is better. You
might try some outdoor shots in bright sun with the flash set on auto and
see if the results are better. If there is a problem with spectral
highlights bouncing off the sensor TTL would be iffy at best outdoors.
