Use the gel VERY sparingly.  You put it on a finger then wipe it all off,
THEN put it on the back of the lens.

Old trick form the Nikonos gang.....

Thanks also for the Vaseline tip, I'll look into it.  My only concern is
shutter damage should the gel work itself loose.
