Adam - I like the textures, too.  Maybe someone has all ready said 
this, but if #1 was my picture, I'd be tempted to crop the top, 
bottom and some of the right side of the shot.  To me, and of course 
opinions may differ, the foreground and background at the top and 
bottom of the shot draw the eye away from the nicely textured bales 
of hay.
