If you were to read the interviews with Salgado in the link that Jayanand 
posted

it seems that Salgado doesn't believe that 'monkeys' are more important than 
people.  It's more like he's finding common ground among people and 
non-human life and that the earth as the foundation for all life is of 
primary importance.
