[Leica] Some Leica news

Leica sales 2005:

We recently had a discussion about Leica's growth 
in sales 2005, and some people were disappointed 
that the camera sales went down 55%. This is 
partially not true. It's only the compact 
film/compact digital cameras that are concerned, 
the M/R/DMR sales went significantly up dued to 
the release of the DMR. I found some more detailed news here:

Looks like a speech of Josef Spichtig, Leica CEO, 
at the annual general meeting, from two days ago. 
There's a lot of blabla, but some interesting statements, like:

- Leica M Rangefinder and R/DMR sales +30.5% (16.6 mio EUR)(1)
- Compact film, compact digital camera sales -55.6% (4.2 mio EUR)(2)
- A digital M is already in beta-testing phase 
and all M lenses can be used on it (3)
- Committment to continue Leica film cameras (4)

Leica and fourthirds:

On one of the german Olympus 4/3 forums, several 
members reported from the "Leica Erlebnistage" in 
Wetzlar, where Leica staff made "repeatedly a lot 
of hints" about possible Leica lenses for a future Panasonic 4/3 DSLR.

That's nothing really new but it keeps the rumour mill running...

(1) Das Leica Gesch?ft mit den Systemkameras 
wuchs um 30,5 % auf 16,6 Mio Euro. Es handelt 
sich hierbei um die Kameras und Objektive aus dem 
Leica Messsuchersystem sowie die Systembausteine 
des Leica Spiegelreflexsystems. Wesentlicher 
Motor der positiven Entwicklung war das LEICA DIGITAL-MODUL-R.

(2) Bei den Leica Kompaktkameras gibt es mit 
einem R?ckgang um 55,6 % auf 4,2 Mio Euro die 
st?rkste Verwerfung. Hintergrund ist das Ende des 
Produktlebenszyklusses der digitalen 
Kompaktkameras LEICA D-LUX und LEICA DIGILUX 2.

(3) Wir arbeiten bereits an einem neuen digitalen 
Standbein im M-System und in unseren Laboren gibt 
es schon die ersten digitalen Testaufnahmen (...) 
Alle Objektive des Leica M-System werden zu verwenden sein.

(4) Trotz aller Fokussierung auf die 
Digitaltechnik wird das klassische, filmbasierte 
Produkt bei Leica also nicht zur Nebensache. Es wird weiterhin gepflegt.
