In the extremely fast-paced & competitive atmosphere of a multi-edition
metropolitan daily, there is virtually no time for fact-checking a breaking
front page story. 

As someone who has worked on a daily, I can tell you that there is often not
even a minute to check that the entire front page is error-free before
sending it to press. A lot is left in the hands of the reporter who does his
damned best to find the most reliable sources while under severe deadline
pressure. Depending on when the story gets in, that may lead to the kind of
"spoke too soon" thing we've just seen.

One of the things the NYT does more judiciously than any other newspaper is
publish errata. For that alone, they deserve considerable respect.
