I noticed this trend years ago and nearly stopped drinking beer. However,
there is a real trend towards "Hausbrauereien" (I think these are called
Microbreweries in English) with unfiltered, strong tasting beer. They only
have a local following (mostly because unfiltered beer doesn't keep and is
difficult to transport), but there are more than a few. Additionally, a
few larger breweries brought out new beers with "character", mostly in
flip-top bottles. These are certainly no low-cost offers, but are very
visible and well liked.

My preferred sorts of beer are the very dark "Schwabenbr?u Das Schwarze"
and "Wallersteiner Landsknecht" from a rather small brewery in southern
Germany, about 80km from my home.
