Yes, that is the point that many of the "Go Green" people overlook or
ignore.  

To the end consumer, batteries and hydrogen "feel good", running clean,
quiet and produce only water. 

But it may cause environmental devastation beyond today's situation to
produce and distribute the hydrogen.

Nuclear doesn't look too bad, if done correctly and safely, if one looks
end-to-end (from mined from the ground, to return of spent fuel to the
ground).

Got to solve lots of other problems with batteries: they have to be
charged. Whence comes the energy to charge the batteries? Big energy
loss between 
generation, recharging and use in vehicle. Unless we go to broadly used
and 
widespread newkular (yes, that's the way he says it!) fusion generating 
plants, more energy will be used by battery-driven cars than by today's 
direct use of gasoline. Same problem with hydrogen motors: enormous
amounts 
of energy required to produce hydrogen.
