Don't be fooled. Alternative energies ARE very expensive. Even if
USians paid normal first world rates for fuel (my local garage is
?0.93 per litre which is not far off $6 per US gallon) it would still
be MUCH cheaper than any alternative, whether currently viable or in
research.
