Doug,
Take a look at a couple of my Seville galleries:

I can assure you that tripod of any kind was simply not an option, 
especially in the Feria. The action was too fast (flamenco), the spaces 
way too tight to even think about tripods.
The only options were fast film or flash. But on the street the flash 
would have done no good either. And I hate flash.
