Leica has always been
associated with high quality, high end products.

Not nearly always, for many years, Leica has re-badged P&S cameras from
Panasonic, Remember the Mini, and the Mini II? That camera was made by
Panasonic,
and badged as a Leica, and an identical one named Minolta.

They've had a variety of partnerships for small cameras including *gasp*
Vivitar, and Fuji, remember the first Leica Digitals?
