Lew,

When I first started learning photography back in 1985, I was anal
retentive about keeping records, so I noted all my exposures etc. I have
since come to the conclusion that this information was never actually
used, and since then I have simply used an Excel spreadsheet to record
my film information. Each roll has a number like 2005_31, and I have
also recorded which images on each roll I have scanned and what the
subject matter of the roll is. This only to enable me to locate a given
image quickly. Now that I shoot digitally, I don't bother with that--of
course, the exposure data and the date and time of the image is recorded
by the camera.

At some point I will have to start to use keywording software (or just
the functionality built in to the software I already use, like ACDSee),
but for now I prefer to spend my time on the actual photography :-)
