Interesting point about the burning vs. plowing under.  In the vast corn
belt of the U.S. the stuble is left in the field to hold the soil and
moisture until just before planting.  Just before the seed goes in the
ground the stubble is disced into the soil to add organic matter to hold
water.  A lot of the corn belt is significantly drier than sunny England.
