That was frost. It was so cold that the condensation from my breathing froze on to my beard before it got a chance to get away from my face. At that moment it was a little colder than 20 below. I remember it well. I about got frost-bitten by trying to work the aluminium focusing knob on my Rolleicord (the shutter kept working though ... except for the slow speeds).
