The cataloguing software that I use iView MediaPro 3 has a feature 
called Find > Show Similar.  It can search through as many catalogues 
as you tell it to and find items with either similar visual 
appearance or similar file names.  For the visual appearance you can 
tell it to do a tight or a loose match.  It does seem to work 
remarkably well.  I use it to edit out similars in stock submissions.
