The kit lens isn't all that bad, but then I haven't used mine more than a
few times :-)

As Don says but a 35mm - or 28mm - prime lens, people shot with the 35mm
equivalent for decades and produced some of the most memorable images of the
last century.

Phil,
Nathan and B.D. were correct to try and persuade you to not get the kit
lens.  The manufacturers are trying to get you to buy the kit lens as they
are very cheap to make and you pay $100 for them.

If you end up going the Canon route, the 17-40 is a good lens, the 17-85 is
pretty good, and Tamron makes several good wide to normal zooms.  Of course
you could always buy a 35mm F2 and use it as a 50. :)
