That's why, all other things being equal, I chose the Pentax *istD. It is
relatively inexpensive and very small. I just don't like lugging a heavy
camera.

I repeat, all DSLRs in the market, whether they be Canon, Nikon, Pentax 
or whatever will give you results that are perfectly fine, and usable by 
about 99% of DSLR users, and my guess is that results will be pretty 
much identical at all price points. One might have less noise, the other 
will have superior metering, the third will be light and compact. All 
equipment are a series of trade offs. What is far more important is how 
instictive the ergonomics are for regular use, and that can only be 
judged by handling the cameras yourself.
