Hi Nathan,
I have never used acdsee, but for the purpose you mention I find the  
Bridge part of PS adequate. I use view "as filmstrip". This gives  
exactly what it says plus the selected thumbnail has a quite big  
version in the main window. I have not been unhappy with this method  
to filter through my efforts.
