Ric,
The tape thing will diffuse the light perceptably as long as you are doing
macro work.  The 3M invisible tapes work well or if you go high tech one of
the Rosco diffusers from a sample pack will also do the trick.

You fly is an example of a smart work around.  Great thinking.
