The free e-mail services are notorious sources of spam, and are often blocked by ISPs and server administrators. However, this blocking is on the IP-address level (or a range of IP addresses), so that it will rarely happen that for example all of Gmail is blocked. The moral is that you get what you pay for... Having said all that, using a paid service is no guarantee either. On occasion, both AOL and the mail server at the university where Aaron is have blocked my ISP, planet.nl, which is a paid service and a subsidiary of KPN. The safest thing is to use your "own" mail server, which does not necessarily mean actually having a server in your house--it can be one that is part of your shared hosting package, such as the one I am using to send this message (nathanfoto.com is actually hosted in Atlanta).
