The first was to continue documenting fishing wharfs in Eastern North Carolina. They seem to be disappearing as catches decline and waterfront property prices forcing bluecollar areas to give way to condominiums. North Carolina requires setting property values based on "market" value, often forcing fishermen who inherited land on the water to sell as property taxes climb out of reach. Those wharf pictures are here along with a couple of other things I saw while relaxing: http://gallery.leica-users.org/album475 My other self-assignment was to shoot a free dental clinic sponsored by our church. St. Peter's Episcopal in Washington, NC hosted a group called Open Door Dentistry of Alamance. They bring in volunteer dentists and hygienists to provide dental care for people who might otherwise not receive it. Students and faculty from UNC's Dental School, as well as local and other interested people. Luckily, the clinic director said they needed pictures more than they did another volunteer assistant or janitor;^) I admire all the work that folks do on foreign missions, but we occasionally need to reflect on the need of those here at home.
