Kyocera did something similar with the now defunct Contax N1 35mm. That was
a separate LCD screen arrangement that sat in the hotshoe and had some sort
of sensor (camera?) that fitted over the eyepiece. I had the camera but not
the LCD finder.
I can't recall any additional elec contacts but then the source was entirely
optical for that one.

Sorry, Don, but to me that doesn't make sense as it would have to have
electrical contacts somewhere around the viewfinder eyepiece, or am I
missing something here.
