No no Jim, that's not what they meant about compressing your data.
You could try a back up (with a car)

Several days ago there was a thread about cleaning a hard drive before
releasing it to salvage.  I decided to "clean" a failed Western Digital
Caviar drive because Dell is conducting a one-time pick-up of all brands of
computer hardware in Nashville on Saturday.  I tried the 8-pound hammer
approach and was amazed at the toughness of the metal top.  Because I did
not have a Torx driver small enough to open the case, I hammered it until it
split, then put in a vise and used some other tools to distort the disk
itself.  See the results below.
