Wow, I missed this thread :-)  You said it!!!!!

I'm a rocker and a jazzer, and there's *nothing* like a really
good jazz show for artistry, virtuosity and pure energy, IMHO.
A great sax or guitar player and a drummer are just an interactive
pair to sit back and behold.  At this point in my appreciation, I
can even appreciate a good jazz bass solo :-)

p.s. Then again, re: comments above, I really hate "smooth jazz" :-)
