I think you hit it on the head Adam.  The M does help (quite a bit) the 
photographer get closer to the subject in a way that doesn't upset the 
existential moment.  Mainly I believe this to be an ergonomic issue which 
allows nearly seamless interaction between subject, photographer, and 
equipment.  I'm hard pressed to think of another camera which lends its 
self so well in this regard.
