I like Jazz music, and by far most jazz musicians don't get
paid much. So I feel good buying their recordings, even better
if it's directly at a gig or through their Websites.

That said, the music industry has been shooting itself in the
foot for years. Big hits only, little artist development, little
"catalog building." And much of the demand of the late
'80 and 90's was just replacement purchases, as folks bought
their old LP stuff on CD's. So now they freak out that music
sales are declining rapidly and attribute this all to piracy -
but more is attributable to listeners having by now rebought
all the Floyd and Dylan and Stones recordings on CD. And
the "cassingle" never successfully replaced the good old 45
for young kids, and they can't afford to spring for a $16 CD.
And on and on and on.

IIRC, I think the EFF did a survey and found that folks who
downloaded lots of music purchased more CD's than the
average bear. Go figure.
