Wouldn't that physical aperture change with focus from infinity to close-up?
Surely it would, but not enough to affect exposure.

Funny. My new Summilux 35 asph is faster than 1.4. At the f1.4 click 
position, where the blades are still visible through the front, I can 
open the aperture blades slightly more until they disappear. I made 
two testshots, f1.4 resulted in a 1/223 speed, while the more opened 
aperture needed a 1/239 speed only. Roughly calculated this makes a 
f=1.372 lens!
