Henning and Mark, I really respect the opinions and experience of the pro
shooters here and I know we've had a thread on this
before. Probably like religion or politics no one will ever change anyone
else's mind on this.
In your experience then, you consider that there is a demonstrable loss of
image quality as a result of having a (high quality)
filter fitted? Or you just don't think that it is worth the effort or
expense to fit the filter? Yes I understand that modern Leica
lens coatings are reportedly tough. Those of older lenses are evidently less
so. We have all seen many ads that begin "usual wipe
marks on front element" or similar.
I don't know Erik at all, but I do believe that any damage to the front
coating (lenses, not Erik) will certainly reduce the
intrinsic value, whether in daily professional use or sitting in a
collection. Whether or not such marks may affect the results is
not the issue, it is the perception that it may. I mean the resale value
when you come to trade up to a new lens for whatever
reason. Don't disparage collectors though, without them I don't think that
we would have a viable Leica at all.
FWIW, I don't have filters on my Leica lenses for protection. They always
have the additional benefit of protection from the hoods,
though. I'm just an amateur and I do coddle my gear.
Cheers
Hoppy

Clearly more a collector than a shooter.
