This sounds to me like a file permissions issue.
Try booting from the installer disk (CD or DVD) but instead of installing, 
run the Disk Utility, and ask it to Verify Disk Permissions. If they look 
bad, ask it to Repair Disk Permissions.

You can find out for sure by opening the bonnet and looking at the files in 
the Unix system underneath.

I assume you've tried using spotlight on the term "acrobat" ?
