Lovely shot, Alastair. I also prefer the vertical.

Another way to burn in the highlights is to duplicate the image on a  
new layer, and run through the blend modes. Myself I'd probably  
select multiply, erase the foreground carefully, and vary the opacity  
of the mulitplying layer until the image looked natural.

The other hints people have posted are also excellent.
