Brian, that measurement would have to be only 22 mm, surely?  That  
is, a little less than an inch, which is 25.4 mm.  22 cm is a little  
more than 2/3rds of a foot!

Do folks in the US get taught metric measurements at school?   
Alastair and Hoppy and I would be of on an age where we got both  
barrels at school.  Aussie kids these days only get taught metrics,  
and so look at us old buggers funny when we say inch, foot or mile.   
At least that's why I think they're looking at us funny.
