Loss...

Lossy or almost lossy algorithms are subjective judgments. This is not an
objective optical assessment.

If you are a real expert in imaging ( not photography, imaging) lossy
artifacts are obvious ( to a point). People that designed the
jpg and mpeg algorithms could see stuff that seemed impossible for me to
see. For the occasional user ( like Grandma looking at
Peggy Sue's graduation pictures) loss is no big deal, and it appears
non-lossy.

Do not buy off on someone else's assessment of lossy algorithms. See them
for yourself and make your own call. Remember, image
size IS important. Blow up the images to the size you expect you will need,
and view them from the distance you expect to use.
Then you can make a suitable assessment for yourself.

You may find that one man's almost lossless is another man's way too lossy.
