Subject: [Leica] New 28mm Elmarit M Lens and the vignetting saga

Hmm, I've finally engaged my brain in gear and started looking at the
correct part of the specifications from Leica on these 28's.
Apologies to all if I seemed (was)dense.
So at the extreme frame corners, the official figures for illumination
Sagittal structures (100% = no vignetting or no illumination fall off)
                        f5.6
Summicron ASPH 40%
Elmarit pre ASPH 42%
Elmarit ASPH 41%

I don't see a significant difference there that would account for the cron
ASPH reportedly vignetting a lot more than the others. Go
ahead and buy one!
Some variations in our pictures shown as far as cropping of the outside
edges and normally I'd consider the performance out to about
15mm diagonally from the centre more important. Those figures too, clearly
only relevant on a 35 mm frame. No surprise that the M8
is a different situation. You'd have to compare the 21 (hmm about 40% at the
same angle, how about that?)

I really welcome some more pics from any wides, if people wanted to compare
further. As a practical matter, of course we're talking
degrees of excellence here, aren't we?

Cheers

Hi Jim,
I am using the new Elmarit-M 28/2.8 asph with the M8. The lens is
superb if you can live without F/2. I do. No vignetting, FOV pretty
close to the 35mm I'm used to, incredible resistance to flare, very
very sharp. A little more contrasty than the previous version Elmarit-
M 28/2.8 pre-aspherical, but in line with other asph lenses.
As a bonus, it is a very compact lens.

It's glued to the M8.

Best,
Ed
