We have two dogs, have for a while. Older dogs seem to benefit from a  
puppy and younger companion. It leaves us with a friend when the  
inevitable happens. After some time, we get a young dog to keep the  
now older dog happy.

I always HATED that time when I had no dog and couldn't bear to get one.
