If you put your camera on a tripod. Focus on a specified point on a  
ruler, at 45 degrees, you'll find out whether the lens is focusing:  
on, in front, or in back of the point of focus.

You must lock it down. Attempting focus tests without locking  
everything down is pure folly.

One of the many things I love about digital - the ease and quickness  
of performing these sorts of tests. The instant feedback is a delight.
