I wrote to Polaroid re: the rumor that 55 will be discontinued.  
Here's their response:

We are fine for 2007 and in 2008 we will re-assess because sales are  
dropping.

I wish I knew the answer myself after being here since 1967.

Keep checking in. I'll let you know what I know.

But in the meantime, if things do change, I can only suggest you  
explore other options to meet your long term photographic needs.
