Interesting observation, Lee. I'm not a Mac expert either, just a  
fairly experienced user, but I can't quite picture how a non-running  
program could affect the behavior of a running program (preventing  
the camera from being detected by iPhoto in your case, Photoshop in  
mine) or prevent the camera from appearing on the desktop. But if it  
happened to you with Lightroom, it may be happening to me with Aperture.
