I have looked very carefully at this photo...both full frame and the 
crop... I think you would get the same noise using color negative film.  
It appears to be rather severe underexposure of the background.  I can 
certainly duplicate that with color negative film (and have to my 
dismay).  I sometimes wonder what standard this digital is being held 
against.
